    About the Craft

Longpi pottery, often termed as black stone pottery or Longpi Ham, hails from the serene village of Longpi in Manipur, India. Distinguished by its dark earthenware texture, this traditional craft is unique in its production process which notably excludes the use of a potter's wheel. Each piece is skillfully handmade by the artisans, emphasizing the patience and dexterity entailed in its creation.

    Craftsmanship and Process

Longpi pottery has a distinctive process, compelling in its simplicity yet profound in its precision. Here is a deep dive into the detailed stages of its creation:

    Preparation of Clay

The journey begins with the preparation of clay. The primary raw materials include a unique blend of serpentinite stone and weathered rock, mixed with water to form a durable and pliant clay. The components have their individual roles where serpentinite stone imparts strength to the clay, while weathered rock acts as a binding agent, bringing coherence to the mixture.

    Hand Moulding

The absence of a potter's wheel necessitates a meticulous hand-moulding process, making each piece distinctly unique. The artisans gently shape the clay, bringing forth the desired form with deft and precision hand movements. This stage is intrinsic to the uniqueness of Longpi pottery, each piece reflecting the individuality of its maker.

    Drying

Post shaping, the articles are left to air-dry for approximately 4-5 days. This step is critical as it gradually reduces the moisture content, minimizing the risk of cracks or deformities during firing.

    Firing

Once dried, the pieces undergo a lengthy firing process, lasting 5-6 hours. Conducted at intense heat, this stage solidifies the pottery, endowing it with its characteristic hardness and durability.

    Finishing

Upon completion of the firing process, the items are then polished with Chiron leaves. Rubbing with these leaves gives the pieces a distinctive and polished finish, adding a subtle sheen to the otherwise matte surface.

    Decorative Detailing

Where required, artisans incorporate cane for decoration. This detail not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the pottery but also signifies the intricate craftsmanship involved in each piece.
