Longpi pottery, also known as stone pottery, is an age-old craft originating from Longpi village in Manipur. Unlike most pottery forms, Longpi pottery does not employ the potter’s wheel. Instead, each piece is meticulously hand-moulded, making every item distinctly unique. This artisanal process involves the use of locally sourced materials and age-old techniques, preserving the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The creation of Longpi pottery begins with the meticulous preparation of clay. This craft utilizes a unique mixture of serpentinite stone and weathered rock, blended with water. Serpentinite stone lends strength to the pottery, while weathered rock acts as an excellent binding agent, ensuring the clay holds together during the hand-moulding process.
Once the clay is prepared, it is skilfully shaped by hand. This hands-on approach not only allows for greater design variability but also imbues each piece with a distinct, rustic charm. The shaping process is followed by an extensive drying period, where the moulded products are left to dry naturally for 4-5 days.
After drying, the pieces are subjected to a prolonged firing process. They are kept on an open flame for 5-6 hours. This method enhances the durability and strength of the pottery, ensuring that it can withstand everyday use.
Post-firing, the product is given a smooth finish by rubbing it with Chiron leaves. This natural finishing method not only imparts a glossy sheen to the pottery but also contributes to its eco-friendliness. To add an extra touch of authenticity and artistry, cane detailing is sometimes incorporated into the design.
