Longpi pottery, also known as stone pottery, is an age-old craft originating from the Longpi village in Manipur, India. This traditional craft does not rely on the potter's wheel. Instead, the artisans hand-mold the clay, creating unique and organic shapes that speak of an ancient tradition and meticulous craftsmanship. Longpi pottery is distinguished by its natural black color and matte finish, giving each piece a rustic appeal that brings a touch of authenticity to your table setting.
The preparation of clay begins with a meticulous process that combines serpentinite stone with weathered rock and water. The serpentinite stone contributes strength, while the weathered rock serves as a binding agent, ensuring durability and sturdiness in the final product.
Unlike conventional pottery methods, Longpi artisans hand mold the clay to give it the desired shapes. This technique allows for greater flexibility and creativity, resulting in unique and individualistic items.
Once shaped, the products are left to dry naturally for 4-5 days. This stage is crucial as it ensures that the pottery gains sufficient solidity before the firing process.
After the drying period, the pottery is fired at intense heat for 5-6 hours. This high-temperature firing not only hardens the pottery but also contributes to its characteristic black color.
Post-firing, each piece is polished with Chiron leaves, enhancing its smooth, matte finish. Occasionally, cane is used to decorate the pottery, adding a touch of natural elegance and intricate detailing.
One of the significant advantages of the Longpi Pottery Side Plate is its multifunctionality. Here’s how it meets various kitchen needs:
