The excellent Master piece of Trinetra Shivlingam beautifully crafted in heavy brass with detail work.
Lord Shiva has three eyes (Tri- netra- three-eyes). The right eye is the Sun, the left eye is the moon signifying that the source of light we receive on earth and which sustains all life is Shiva. The third eye represents the eye of wisdom which burns away the evil of ignorance. Shiva is almost always depicted with half open eyes. The fully open eyes symbolize creation and the closed eyes represent dissolution of this universe. The half open eyes symbolize the continuous cycle of creation and destruction of the universe.
Shivaling has three distinct parts which are considered as portions of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The lower part represents Brahma, the middle Vishnu and the upper and the most prominent represents Shiva. Thus, Shivling represents all the three powers in one- as the Param Braham or Supreme Shiva. Another interpretation considers Shivling to be divided in two parts Shiva and Shakti. The top part is considered Shiva and the yoni is considered to be Shakti.
Snakes (Nagas) have been a part of worship in Hinduism from the very beginning. The most famous myth of Lord Shiva's association with snakes is when he drinks the poison (kalakuda) from Snake Vasuki's mouth during the churning of ocean to get amrit. From that day, Lord Shiva becomes blue throated and is called Nilakantha.
There is mysterious and indescribable power in Shivaling to induce the concentration of mind. It is like the crystal glazing, mind easily attains one-pointedness by looking at the Shivaling. This is the reason why ancient scholars and sages advocated the worship of Shivaling and its installations in temples.

Importance of Idol worship: Idols are not the idle fancies of sculptors, but shining channels through which the heart of the devotee is attracted to and flows towards God.Though the image is worshipped, the devotee feels the presence of the Lord in it and pours out his devotion unto it. Regular worship, Puja and other modes of demonstrating our inner feeling of recognition of Divinity in the idol unveils the Divinity latent in it. This is truly a wonder and a miracle. The picture comes to life. The idol speaks. It will answer your questions and solve your problems. The God in you has the power to awaken the latent Divinity in the idol. The lives of Mirabai, Sant Tukaram, Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Shri Yogananda are a few instances to prove the point. They proved beyond doubt that idol worship has its own brighter side and through simple faith and intense devotion one can realize God through it.
Idols are the "finite representation of the Infinite".As per Vishnu Samhita (ch 29,v55-7),persuasively endorses the use of imagery (idols) and puts it: "Without a form how can God be mediated upon? If (He is) without any form, where will the mind fix itself? When there is nothing for the mind to attach itself to,it will slip away from meditation or will glide into a state of slumber. Therefore the wise will meditate on some form, remembering, however, that the form is a superimposition and not a reality."

Lord Shiva, the Cosmic Deity:
Shiva, the almighty deity, is distinctively known for his three eyes (Tri-netra), which symbolize major cosmic elements. Each eye of Lord Shiva carries profound meaning: - Right Eye (Sun): Represents the vital source of energy and light. - Left Eye (Moon): Embodies the tranquil and reflective lunar light. - Third Eye (Wisdom): The powerful eye of wisdom that eradicates ignorance and nurtures enlightenment.
The Half-Open Eyes: These eyes collectively signify the cycle of creation and dissolution of the universe. Fully open eyes denote creation, while closed eyes symbolize dissolution. The half-open eyes stand for the eternal process of creation and destruction in the universe.
The Shivalingam Structure:
The Shivalingam is depicted with three distinct parts, each representing an integral aspect of the Hindu Triad: - Lower Part: Symbolic of Brahma, the creator. - Middle Part: Representing Vishnu, the preserver. - Upper Part: The prominent section reflecting Shiva, the destroyer.
This divine configuration illustrates the ultimate essence of Param Brahma or Supreme Shiva, embodying the unity of creation, preservation, and destruction.
Mythological Context of Snakes:
Snakes (Nagas) have historically been integrated into worship, especially in connection with Lord Shiva. A significant myth is Lord Shiva’s act of consuming the deadly poison (kalakuda) from Snake Vasuki during the churning of the ocean, which subsequently earned him the epithet "Nilakantha" due to his blue throat.
Concentration and Meditation:
The Shivalingam, with its unique and mesmerising design, has a mysterious power that aids in the concentration of the mind. As ancient scholars and sages noticed, the crystal-like structure of the Sivalingam aids in attaining one-pointedness by merely gazing upon it.
Idol Worship in Hinduism:
Idols are considered more than mere sculptures; they are channels that connect the heart of devotees to the divine. Worshiping the idol channels divine spiritual energy, enhancing the spiritual experience of the devotees. The continuous practice of worship, puja, and rituals reveals the underlying divinity within.
Historical References:
Prominent historical figures such as Mirabai, Sant Tukaram, Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, and Shri Yogananda are notable examples that prove the effectiveness and spiritual benefits of idol worship. Their intense devotion and faith demonstrated the bright side of idol worship, leading one to realize God through this practice.
Finite Representation of the Infinite:
As per the Vishnu Samhita (chapter 29, verses 55-7), idol worship is a potent medium to focus one’s mind. Without a tangible form, meditation can wander or lapse into sleep. Therefore, using imagery (idols) helps to anchor the mind and foster deep meditation, even though the form is a superimposition and not the ultimate reality.
