The Gir Kesar mango, also simply known as Kesar, is a premium mango cultivar cultivated in the foothills of Girnar in Gujarat, western India. Notably distinguished for its vibrant orange-colored pulp, it was awarded geographical indication (GI) status in 2011, solidifying its exclusivity to the region. With the highest concentration of production found in Talala Gir, approximately 45 km from the iconic Gir National Park, this mango is highly sought after not only for its flavor but also its quality and nutritional benefits. Historically, it was introduced in 1931 by Junagadh Wazir Salé Bhai and gained prominence in the 1930s. With an extensive cultivation extending over an area of around 20,000 hectares across Junagadh and Amreli districts, the Gir Kesar mango boasts an annual production estimated at two lakh tonnes. The mango is harvested during April-May and is famous for being among the most expensive yet desirable varieties. Beyond its delectable taste, Gir Kesar mangoes are rich in essential vitamins A, C, E, and B6, offering numerous health benefits, such as immune system support and improved skin health.
